Common Reasons to Replace the X Motor

What you need

  • Error codes 01604 or 013047
  • Print stops unfinished due to motor position errors
  • Carriage stops in the middle of a print
  • Carriage can be pushed left and right by hand while printer is powered on
  • No indicator light or a solid red light on the X motor

Step 1 – Prepare the Printer

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Open the side panel.
  3. Open the front panel.
  4. Rotate the knob counterclockwise to lower the capping station.
  5. Push the carriage to the left side of the printer.
  6. Take a clear picture of the belt position for reference.

Step 2 – Disconnect and Remove the X Motor

  1. Disconnect the first cable from the X motor.
  2. Disconnect the second cable by loosening the two flat head screws.
  3. Remove the four mounting screws securing the X motor.
  4. Hold the motor with one hand while removing the final screw.
  5. Remove the X motor from the printer.
  6. Slip the belt off the drive pulley.

Step 3 – Transfer the Drive Pulley

  1. Take a clear picture of the drive pulley position on the motor shaft.
  2. Locate the hex screws on the drive pulley.
  3. Remove the hex screws.
  4. Remove the drive pulley from the old motor.
  5. Install the drive pulley onto the new X motor shaft.
  6. Align one pulley screw with the flat side of the motor shaft.
  7. Adjust the pulley position to match the reference photo.
  8. Tighten all four hex screws to secure the pulley.

Step 4 – Install the New X Motor

  1. Position the new X motor into the printer.
  2. Install the four mounting screws loosely to allow movement.
  3. Place the belt over the drive pulley.
  4. Use the reference photo to align the belt correctly.
  5. Pull the X motor to the left to apply belt tension.
  6. Manually rotate the belt.
  7. Verify the belt does not shift up or down.
  8. Tighten all four mounting screws fully.

Step 5 – Reconnect Cables and Verify Installation

What you need

  • Green light present on X motor
  • Belt remains centered and does not shift
  • Printer initializes normally
  1. Reconnect both X motor cables.
  2. Tighten the two flat head screws on the applicable cable.
  3. Power the printer on.
  4. Check for a green indicator light on the X motor.
  5. Observe belt movement during initialization.
