Overview of the White Under Black Wizard

  1. Use this wizard to control how much white ink is applied under black and very dark areas.
  2. Understand that although solid black may not require white in theory, digital printing requires some white for opacity and durability.
  3. Apply this wizard to improve opacity for UV printing and reduce fading and cracking for DTG and DTF processes.
  4. Note that the wizard consists of two print steps to determine optimal settings.

Purpose of the Two-Step Wizard Process

  1. Use the first step to print variations of white ink under black areas.
  2. Use the second step to print variations of white ink in areas where the garment partially shows through.
  3. Select a file with fades or transparency for best results.

Launching the Wizard

  1. Open the Q menu.
  2. Select Setup How Much White to Use Under Black.
  3. In the dialog, select the page size of the print bed.
  4. Choose the graphic to use for test prints.
  5. Set the desired print size.
  6. Click Next.

Configuring the Underbase Strength Test

  1. Set the minimum value for white under black.
  2. Example: Set minimum to 0%.
  3. Set the maximum value for white under black.
  4. Example: Set maximum to 100%.
  5. Set the increment value.
  6. Example: Use increments of 20.
  7. Click Print Underbase Strength Chart.

Reviewing Underbase Strength Samples

What you need

  • DTG results depend on printer, garment, and pretreatment
  • Consult the printer manufacturer for DTG recommendations
  • For DTF printing, powder adhesive sticks only to white ink
  • Use higher white under black for DTF, typically 60% to 80% minimum
  1. Locate the generated jobs showing white under black from 0% to 100%.
  2. Right-click a job and select Print, or
  3. Click the Print icon at the top.
  4. Print the samples for real-world evaluation.

Selecting the Preferred Underbase Strength

  1. Review the printed samples.
  2. Return to the Setup How Much White to Use Under Black dialog.
  3. Enter the preferred value in the Underbase Strength field or select it from the drop-down list.
  4. Click Next.

Fine-Tuning White Levels in Transparent Areas

  1. Choose one of the four white level charts: Strong White Midtones Shadows
  2. Select Medium White Midtones Shadows for this example.
  3. Review the white separation curve, noting reduced white in midtones and shadows.
  4. Click Print White Level Chart.

Reviewing White Level Chart Results

  2. Print the charts.

  • The new print mode includes the selected white under black settings
  • The wizard process is complete
  1. Choose how to apply the results: Apply only to the queue
  2. Select Create a New Print Mode.
